Challenge/Achievement:
Nearly all of the challenges were born from the site’s location on a corner lot wedged between 1 road at grade, an underpass, a datacenter built to the property line and railroad tracks. This dictated only one possible location for ingress and egress to the hotel, and no curb areas for trash to be serviced due to the underpass and proximity to a busy intersection. We were able to manifest a solution by negotiating a new internal policy for the City of San Jose and their Waste Management contractors, which allowed us to locate the trash service area below-grade and inside of a covered garage, a location that was forbidden by their prior policy. The combination of a hotel designed with condominiums on the top floors, was also a challenge, but our project was the first of its kind to be entitled in San Jose.
